Fort Travis Seashore Park History

Welcome to a place on the Gulf Coast that has a rich and fascinating history. Originally, the fort was built in 1868 by the Republic of Texas to protect the Galveston Harbor entrance. This historic site was named in honor of Colonel William Barret Travis, a famous defender and hero of the Alamo. The fort played an important role in the defense of the United States during both World War I and World War II. During World War I, Fort Travis was used as a training facility for soldiers before they were sent overseas. In World War II, the fort was heavily fortified with anti-aircraft guns and was used to monitor and protect the Gulf Coast. After the wars, the fort was decommissioned and eventually became a park.
