Don’t Miss the Annual Bolivar Rig Run

It isn’t every day you have the opportunity to witness an ocean sailboat race. Each year, catamarans converge on the Bolivar Peninsula for the Hardheads Bolivar Rig Run. The Bolivar Yacht Club hosts this annual race and draws novice and expert sailors, visitors from around the country, and a lineup of colorful boats.

The Bolivar Rig Run

This unique regatta starts Le Man’s style off the beach at the end of Mr. G Street. Teams drive out onto Crystal Beach with their trucks and boat trailers, launching their catamarans onto the sand near the surf. Seeing the tall sails up and down the beach is truly a sight to behold.

Participants can choose from two different race courses. The “Rig Course” starts from the beach and runs to The Rig, an oil platform approximately 2.5 miles offshore from Crystal Beach. On a clear day, beachgoers can see the oil platform from the beach. See the video below if you have ever wondered what The Rig looks like up close. Racing this course takes teams to The Rig and back.

The second course is named the “Wreck Course.” This course also leaves from the beach and goes to The Rig. However, once teams have reached The Rig, they will navigate to The Wreck and back. The Wreck is a sunken boat approximately 3,000 feet off Bolivar Beach, southwest of the race start. It is visible from the beach, but most visitors don’t get the opportunity to see it up close.
